  • Fall tuition increase aims to help students

    Abstract:
Tuition will increase by about 7.9 percent, an extra $247 per student per semester, beginning this fall.

The Board of Regents approved President Gretchen Bataille's proposal to raise tuition in February, confirming that the increase will begin this fall, which will change the budget for this school year....

AND ... they're proposing a new football field. Complete with upper deck.

Yep, students are going to pay for an upper deck. Does that sound right to you?

If a new football stadium isn't built, football will be dead in 10 years. We need the land anyways for future academic buildings, parking, dorms, etc. The fee increase for the stadium will be small.

As for what has Dr. B done for UNT to deserve her raise... well, she has increased donations, she has broadened UNT's appeal, she helped bring the Texas State Historical Association to UNT, she got funding for the new business building... Her job is to make UNT better, not keep it as the cheap alternative for DFW students.

Ummmm....Most of the funding for the new business building had already been aquired before Dr. B. even got here. COBA is flipping most of the bill with received donations. I would give more credit to Norval Pohl on the business building.

The Texas State Historical Association didn't come here because of Dr. B. They were impressed with the Department of History's focus on Texas History.

About the football stadium. Yes, we do need a football stadium. You need a tetanus shot just from looking at it. However, the current stadium is no where close to being full, and just building a new stadium isn't going to put more butts in the seats. More needs to be invested in the football program to hire better coaches and recruiters.

Better football = more butts in the seats = more funding to build a new stadium.

    Alternate titles for this article:

"Fall tuition increase aims to help students pay for President Bataille's Biannual Raises and Bonuses"

"Fall tuition increase aims to help students become homeless"

"Fall tuition increase aims to help students satisfy President Bataille's Neiman Marcus shoe fetish"

Seriously, what has Bataille done for the University that is deserving of a $30,000 raise and $98,750 bonus announced at the end of last year and another $18,000 raise and $45,000 bonus at the beginning of this fall semster?? THAT'S 191,750 paid in bonuses and raises in one year!! If the $247 increase mentioned in this article is correct, it will take 777 students just to pay for he bonuses and raises!! It is also complete BS that they gave staff just a 1% raise "For living expenses." There are staffers at the university who can barely pay to put gas in their tanks, and this tiny "raise" will not be enough to compensate for the tuition hike. I guess the Regents are more concerned that President Bataille uses gold leaf toilet paper than the students who are paying their salary. The board of regents also wonders why UNT is near the bottom on the list for alumni donations.

Bobcat, I appreciate that you are in favor of a new stadium.

If you look at Fouts as a functional 20k seat stadium (which is it's original design) we have had 6 sellouts in the past 3 years, and over 85% capacity in all other games except for two (Thanksgiving weekend games). Quite frankly, the horrible design prevents us from ever filling the stadium. We have never had an official sellout since expanding to 30,000 seats, even during the 4 years of conference championships.

I would submit that a new stadium would indeed bring better attendance. A brand new stadium would attract more students, if anything just to check it out. And in a county with a population of almost 600,000 people, certainly a better game day experience and curiosity would sell more tickets.

Finally, better facilities would attract better players, which in turn will sell more seats.

Back to Dr. Bataille, she was indeed part of the process in bringing the TSHA to UNT. Of course, they didn't come BECAUSE of Dr. B but she did pitch UNT to them. That's her job, to promote the university. She has helped improve the university in so many ways, I find it difficult to believe that you don't see it. I understand people are upset about higher tuition and then look at her salary and bonuses and get upset. But those bonuses come to just $2 per student for one year.

The fact is that the state of Texas has severely cut funding and all schools are having to raise tuition to make up for it. And despite the tuition increases and the proposed stadium funding, UNT is still the best education for the money in the state.
