  • 'Ignite the Night' raises awareness of domestic violence

    Abstract:
As various organizations around Denton gear up for "Ignite the Night," the event formerly known as "Take Back the Night," we here at the Daily applaud, ahead of time, those who plan to participate.
Amidst the panty drops and sock hops of months past, feminism still has a viable message; the safety of women....

Neither MAV nor FMLA had anything to do with the name change this year, just to clear up any confusion. Denton County Friends of the Family is the major coordinator of "Ignite the Night" (formerly "Take Back the Night"). Events such as these are very empowering and have the ability to change people's lives and as the statistics show, more than 3/4 of the victims of sexual assault are women. Neither DCFOF, FMLA, nor MAV turn a blind eye to violence against men, however our focus during these events is geared towards women because we know statistically they are more likely to be victims rather than perpetrators.

Here's the funny thing with this sort of crime... that is only the "reported" incidents. I'm quite sure its not 75%/25%. Its probably a little more on 66%/33%.

Still, why ignore 1/4 to 1/3 of the victim population? That's like ignoring blacks and hispanics (14 and 17% of the population, respectively) up to ignoring ALL minorities (70% of the US is white).

While these sorts of things are needed, they need to be more often and more aimed at ending all violence. Sorry, but to me, violence is just as bad no matter who is on the receiving end.

Sorry, typo'ed the racial demographics. Hispanics are roughly 13% of the population and blacks are nearly 12.7%. This comes from the last census.

Let us first begin with what we know, and what has been reported. You must begin from a tangible source/number/statistic somewhere. Let's end the violence against all MEN, WOMEN, and CHILDREN!!!! Let's do this by supporting events like these instead of arguing over statistics.

Did you even research your topic? You could have taken 10min of your time to call up these organizations and get the information you so desired without sounding condescending (which you did). Please next time you have an opinion and feel compelled to write about it, make it an informed one.

"we here at the Daily", "we" this and that... The Daily could technically sue you for libel.
Also, violence commited by men to women and violence commited by men to other men is higly disproportionate to the violence women cause anyone (not non-existant, but HIGHLY disproportianate. Men's violence toward women is an epidemic.)

Get over the Panty Drop Sock Hop. It was a funny name and it made a lot of money.
