    MARFA, Texas (AP) - Tom Shuford, a longtime journalist and professor who taught the craft to generations of reporters, has died. He was 63. Shuford died July 13 and was buried Friday, Alpine Memorial Funeral Home director Larry Cordova said. Shuford taught journalism at the University of Texas at Arlington for nearly 30 years and served as director of the Texas Freedom of Information Foundation, the Denton Record-Chronicle reported.     New bar to open on Fry Street next to Pita Pit

    Just in time for the fall semester, Pita Pit has purchased the space next door, which was previously Eagle Text, and has plans to turn it into a bar called Beer Pit. Owner Tim Raiet originally planned to call the bar the UNT Beer Pit, but the university did not approve of the name. (4) comments

    DALLAS (AP) - Dallas-area radio personality Russ Martin was released from jail after being arrested on an assault charge, authorities said. Martin, host of the popular Russ Martin Show on KLLI-FM, was arrested Friday on a charge of aggravated assault with bodily injuries with a deadly weapon. (0) comments

    Fry Street generates fewer phone calls to police

    Denton police records show a decrease in total complaint calls from Fry Street during the past two years. According to statistics from the Denton Police Department, the number of calls received from Fry Street has decreased by 8.1 percent between June 2006 and May 2008 from the 100 block of Avenue A through the 200 blocks of Fry Street, between West Mulberry Street and West Oak Street.     New parking codes could allow more parking spaces near campus for duplexes, according to a new city ordinance discussed by the City Council on Tuesday. Formerly the parking restrictions allowed only two parking spaces for an entire duplex. The new code will allow an additional parking space for each duplex that surpasses three bedrooms, said Mark Cunningham, director of planning and development for the city of Denton. (0) comments

    Denton is the 10th fastest growing city in the country, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. In 2006 and 2007 three Texas cities were ranked as the fastest-growing top 10 with McKinney and Denton ranking third and 10th, respectively, and Killeen at sixth, according to the bureau. (1) comment

    UNT Dallas gets new deputy vice provost and first director of finance

    New hire promises strong fiscal management for campus

    The UNT Dallas campus selected a new deputy vice provost and the first director of finance and administration for the soon to be freestanding university. Maxine Rogers of the Baton Rouge Community College System is serving as the campus' first director of finance and administration. (1) comment

    For the first time at UNT, Portuguese will be offered as a language course this fall. The class is finally available after being requested three years ago by Christine Koop, chair of the department of foreign languages and literatures, she said in an e-mail interview. (0) comments

    Daniel Henry, UNT Physics doctoral student and astronomy lecturer, was found dead Thursday night in his Denton apartment. Henry was 27 years old. Troy Taylor of the Denton County Medical Examiner's office said that Henry was found at 10:42 p. (10) comments
