NT's enrollment rose to 34,795 students and reached a milestone of more than 4,000 Hispanic students in the eighth consecutive year of record increases. The largest jump occurred in the Hispanic category, as it grew 9.2 percent with 350 new students. Officials at NT Dallas are grinning this semester as the numbers for enrollment continue to climb, reaching a peak of 2,212 students, according to the campus's headcount taken after the 12th class day. With makeshift noisemakers and campaign signs, it was a battle for the White House Tuesday night at the annual Clash of the Minds. Hosted by NT's NAACP and the University Program Council, the debate featured 11 panelists representing organizations ranging from the main two political party groups to many other student organizations, such as the League of United Latin American Citizens, Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance and Students for Individual Liberty. NT plans to build two new buildings at the Fort Worth Health Science Center as well as a green area that are slated to be completed by 2010. Tentatively called Building A and Building B, the new centers will have classrooms, at least one cafeteria and offices along with study areas and medical training facilities, said Rich Escalante, NT system vice chancellor for administrative services Building A will be built first and is the main concentration of the project. The new College of Business Administration building project will cost about $70 million, which is $10 million more than was originally planned. The building project, which will be paid for mostly by tuition revenue and assistance money from the state, is higher than expected because of the rising costs of materials and gas to transport them. The UNT Bookstore increased its sustainability section this fall, limiting its inventory to only environment-friendly and recycled papers. The new section is filled with Environotes recycled notebooks, filler paper, envelopes, index cards, folders, pens, pencils and copy paper. (1) comment
The albino squirrel is delivering an important message to students this fall: vote! The unofficial pale mascot will be appearing on a series of campaign buttons encouraging students to go to the polls this November. The button depicts the albino squirrel holding a sign that says "VOTE" while wearing a red, white and blue top hat and a blue vest. (1) comment
Not many students get to speak for their peers during their first year of college, but this year, 44 freshmen do. The Student Government Association freshman intern program allows first-year NT students to try their hand at representative government. Andrew Robertson, a political science freshman and SGA freshman intern, said it is good to have a voice in student government as a freshman. (0) comments
