    Bataille cites NT's programs, achievements

    President Gretchen Bataille invited NT faculty and staff to eat a continental breakfast in the University Union's Silver Eagle Suite yesterday while she discussed NT's academic achievements over the past year.     DART offers NT Dallas students free passes, gets the word out

    NT Dallas students can pick up free passes today to ride the Dallas Area Rapid Transit system. DART stickers are available to attach to the student IDs of NT students enrolled in at least three hours on the Dallas campus. The number of students requesting the pass has grown since they first started distributing them last year, said Kenya Kemp, graduate assistant of student development. (0) comments

    City holds hearing on budget, tax rate

    At the first public hearing for the 2007-08 City of Denton proposed budget, John Schneider, a representative of the Senior Citizens' Center, asked the council for $6,000 to be added to the center's transportation budget. In a petition, signed by 270 senior citizens in Denton, they requested the money to rent a bus for the 30 trips they make each year. (0) comments

    There were 20 reports of leaking roofs and flooded basements Monday, according to the facilities maintenance office. "We had some roof leaks [Monday], but the staff just put trash cans out to catch the water until we could get there," said Nora Mathis of the facilities maintenance department. (0) comments

    Denton police initiate new program

    Students see increased police presence downtown

    NT students might see more Denton police officers when they visit the Denton square and the surrounding business district. The Denton Police Department will increase its visibility with the recently formed program, Square Crime and Traffic Team. The program, though only in its third week, has drawn skepticism and praise from students and local businesses. (0) comments

    Government Web sites never die - they just end up in the CyberCemetery. NT's libraries work with the Government Printing Office and the National Archives and Records Administration on a project that archives government Web sites. The project, the CyberCemetery, captures government Web sites before they are closed down and disappear, said Cathy Hartman, assistant dean to digital and information technologies. (0) comments

    A new housing program aimed at increasing academic achievement lets students choose to live in major-specific dorms this fall. The Residents Engaged in Academic Living Communities program includes specially designated wings in Clark Hall for biology majors, Kerr Hall for communication design majors and Bruce Hall for jazz studies majors.     Arts and Sciences plans  new degree

    Plans to develop a B.S. and M.S. degree in biological and environmental engineering are underway with implementation planned for fall 2008. Currently only a handful of schools in the world have a similar program. Miguel Acevedo, regents professor in the Department of Geography, said "environmental issues today are complex and require an understanding of biology, chemistry, and other sciences. (0) comments
