In July CNNMoney.com voted Denton as the 57th best place to live in America.
The Web site cited the reasons as Denton's having safe neighborhoods, good schools and two universities. It also mentioned Denton's historic downtown square and the Fry Street area.
"Denton has that small town vibe with a lot of diverse people, not to mention it is not very far away from Dallas," said Sebastian Paramo, an English senior.
Paramo, who is originally from Garland, has lived in Denton for two years and said he enjoys being a part of the community.
"I liked Garland OK, but it is a really big city that is very commercialized," Paramo said. "Denton, on the other hand, feels smaller and it has so much history."
Rod Jones has been a resident of Denton for 45 years and said he was proud to see the headline on CNNMoney.com.
"Even though Denton is definitely a growing city, it still keeps that suburban and campus appeal," Jones said.
Jones said he is excited about the new developments springing up throughout the city.
"I actually like what they are doing around here," he said. "Now I won't have to go to Dallas to do my shopping; I can just stay here."
Jones said he considers Denton an excellent place to settle down and raise a family because of the schools in the area and the job opportunities.
"You can actually make an honest living in Denton because it is so cheap to live here," Jones said.
Kim Phillips, with the Denton Travelers Bureau, assists in producing the Denton Live magazine, which helps attract visitors to Denton.
"The Denton Live magazine covers Denton's festivals, museums and art shows," she said. "It is the most important toll we have in attracting visitors."
Among the other cities in the area that made the list were Lewisville, Southlake and Carrollton. Round Rock came in seventh with Plymouth, Minn. and Fort Collins, Colo., coming in first and second, respectively.
"I think Denton is great," Paramo said. "If I could, I would live here long after graduating from college."
