Katz's Burgers, the '50s-themed diner, was a blast from the past, minus a few poodle skirts and a jukebox.

When we walked in, it took a few minutes to figure out if we were supposed to seat ourselves or if we should wait to be seated. We eventually saw the "order here" sign, but we wished that the employees had at least greeted us with a smile at the door and directed us to the ordering area.

It took us a while to order because there were such a wide variety of options on the menu. Katz's offers not only burgers, but also salads, poboys, catfish and sandwiches.

After we placed our orders, we were given a buzzer, then we filled up our own drinks and sat at an old fashioned table with red diner chairs.

While we were waiting, we chatted and tapped our feet to the "old school" tunes as we watched CNN on the big screen television in the corner.

Our food arrived after about ten minutes. However, Karren's buffalo wings weren't ready quite yet.

Our favorite part of the meal was being a part of the diner's slogan, "We grill it…You top it!" We were pleased to find out our burgers came plain and dry, leaving us free to choose our own toppings at the buffet of condiments and trimmings nearby.

Karren ordered a bacon cheddar burger that she thought was one of the best burgers she'd had in a long time. She enjoyed it because it tasted freshly home-cooked. Her wedge fries were tasty but left her wanting more since they only provided a few.

When we had almost finished our meal, her appetizer dish of buffalo wings finally arrived. They were average, leaving much to be desired.

Shea started out with an appetizer order of chicken strips. They had the appearance of fish but tasted like an average piece of chicken.

She chose a plain cheddar burger for her main course. At first she didn't like the texture of the meat, but it grew on her. More than the actual meat, the buttery toasted buns were the best part. Her seasoned curly fries had just the right crisp.

With fairly college-friendly prices, we would recommend this burger joint to any all-American connoisseur.

    Katz's Hamburgers, at 901A Avenue C, is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.
