Contest awards new business ideas
Three NT students who participated in the 2008 New Venture Creation Contest will be awarded $25,000.
Business seniors Blaire Chilcoat, Jeremy Dean and Amanda Stewart won the award by creating a business proposal for Nature's Freedom Wildlife Sanctuary.
The sanctuary, which will be built in Sanger, will rescue and rehabilitate animals as well as educate the public about wildlife conservation.
The NT student competition, sponsored annually by the NT Murphy Enterprise Center, awarded $15,000 to The Tax Brothers. This proposal came in second place and was created by business senior Edwin Dubois and education senior Arnel Rolfe to offer tax services to college students and small businesses.
Business graduate student Paul Passmore and his associate, Joel Harrison, won third place by creating a searchable database of local churches titled Figlist.com.
Child education organization seeks donations
The Success for Life Through Reading organization is in need of money or book donations. The organization, founded by George Morrison of the early childhood education faculty, aims to help preschool children develop skills to help them in school and in life by giving them books.
Student volunteers for the organization also read to different preschool and daycare classes every week. Students from all fields are encouraged to participate, but in particular special education students, Spanish speakers and students who know sign language are needed to volunteer for the organization.
For more information on how to contribute, contact Tena Burley, the director of development for the College of Public Affairs and Community Service, at 940-369-8208.

This Friday, NT will host the fourth-annual Child Welfare Conference in the Silver Eagle Suite of the University Union. The event begins at 8:15 a.m. and will feature several speakers discussing this year's theme, "Child Protective Services Achieving Outcomes."
