The Student Publication Committee named a journalism senior with years of experience at the NT Daily, as well as professional papers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, as editor-in-chief of the Daily for spring 2009.
Matt Goodman began writing for the Daily as an intern in spring 2006 and moved quickly through the paper's ranks. After working as a staff writer for the news section during the summer and fall of 2006, he became the voice of the Daily as views editor last spring.
The same semester, he covered breaking news as an intern for The Dallas Morning News Web site, dallasnews.com. He then moved his talents across the Metroplex to intern at The Fort Worth Weekly for the summer before returning to NT this semester as managing editor of the Daily.
Goodman plans to focus on convergence and supporting printed stories with slideshows and videos online. He also hopes to create an environment where young or inexperienced writers can thrive.
ìI want to create a learning environment to promote the continued success of the newspaper,î he said, ìand really help the younger students get interested in journalism so that they can take the reins and continue the streak of excellence that weíve had since Jamaal OíNeal.î
Tracy Everbach of the journalism faculty, who serves as the Dailyís adviser, said she looks forward to the stories the Daily will produce under his leadership.
Matt is a vigilant journalist who will uphold the watchdog traditions of the Daily while also serving the university and community with ethical and truthful reporting,î she said.
Student Government Association president Jeff Kline echoed Everbach's excitement about the committee's choice and said he hopes the SGA and the Daily will continue working together to better inform the students.î
"I look forward to working with him next year,"Kline said. "He has been very friendly, very welcoming and always strives to get the most accurate information possible in any story that he writes."
Goodman will be hiring the spring semester's staff during the next few weeks. Applications are available in the Daily office in the General Academic Building Room 117 or online at ntdaily.com. Applications are due by 11 a.m. Nov. 26. Interviews will be held Dec. 1 through Dec. 5.
