Doc's Hickory Creek Barbecue has served up top-notch barbecue at 8956 S. Stemmons Freeway for more than five years, though the location has been a barbecue restaurant for 20 years.
This culinary staple of Hickory Creek is as unpretentious as it gets, from the red gingham tablecloths to the nonstop Elvis Presley tunes. There are no gimmicks, just great barbecue, sides and desserts with a friendly, service-oriented atmosphere.
Heather had the mesquite smoked turkey dinner with green beans and mashed potatoes. The turkey had a smoky flavor that was perfectly complimented by the tangy, homemade barbecue sauce.
The heaping helpings of southern style green beans, baby red mashed potatoes and a hefty slice of melt-in-your-mouth garlic toast rounded out Heather's definition of a fantastic meal.
Not being one to pass on dessert, Heather could not resist the banana pudding. The sweet and creamy pudding was layered with fresh banana slices and crisp vanilla wafers. Heather's entrée, drink and dessert cost around $10, leaving her a very happy customer.
With the heap of meat on his plate, Taylor realized how the restaurant justified its $9 price for a dinner. His pulled pork was tender and flavorful with the sauce.
The sides of macaroni and cheese and the baked beans were fairly pedestrian, but the fantastic buttery garlic toast made up for that. The sweet tea was quite good, as well.
After our experience at Doc's Hickory Creek Barbecue, we understand what has kept patrons coming back for five years. The warm, friendly service, excellent food and incredible value are complemented by a low-key atmosphere.
Doc's Hickory Creek Barbecue is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
