From the license plates plastered all over the walls to the flashing traffic signal by the entrance, The Garage plays up the automotive theme, but it doesn't stop there.

Seats in the booths come from old cars and the tabletops are display cases for an assortment of parts, including license plates, hubcaps and keys from Buicks, Jeeps and Chryslers.

The Garage, at 113 Ave. A, opened in 1993 under the name Mother's. In 2003, management changed the name, bar manager John Ross said.

Ross said the bar benefits from its location across the street from NT. Bars can open earlier because students come over after their early classes, as well as before and after their night classes.

Aside from the automotive obsession, the bar's owners embrace a sports theme. In the middle of the room stand five pool tables and the arcade. Miniature golf and electronic table Texas Hold 'Em games are attractions for sports nuts.

There are two LCD TVs and one giant projection TV so patrons can watch sports games.

Live music plays a large role at the bar, Ross said.

There is room for bands inside and outside on the deck, and Tuesday and Wednesdays are the only nights without live music. Bands can play inside on cold nights and then jam outside when the weather's nice, Ross said.

"We do everything from hip-hop and top 40 to country," Ross said. "And we're still the only bar [in Denton] that has weekly open mic nights."

The venue's open mic nights are Mondays from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Denton resident Mark "Wheels" Allori said The Garage is his regular hangout.

The Garage's staff makes all the difference for him.

"They're rude everywhere else," he said. "I also like the music and the bands."

The Garage is open on Monday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. and from Sunday from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.
