With the holidays approaching, the Denton Humane Society is not only giving the gift of hope to animals but also a life-lasting memory between pets and their owners. The DHS is hosting Santa Paws Pet Pictures from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., December 6,13, and 20 at Calloway's Nursery.
The non-profit organization is offering color photos for $10 for the first, with additional photos for $5. Fashion Merchandising junior, Kimmi Gibbs said she attends the event not only to get a picture of her pup dressed up in a Santa outfit, but also attends because the proceeds go to DHS.
"The Denton Humane Society is a wonderful organization that reaches out to animals. All animals should have a loving home and it is this organization that helps with that," says Gibbs.
The DHS does not have an actual shelter. However, the organization looks for families or individuals over the age of 18 to foster pets until they can find someone to adopt them.
"We host the event to raise funds for our organization because we are non-profit, we only get money received from fundraisers or donations," said DHS board member Lisa Wighaman.
The money the DHS receives is used for medical assistance and spade and neuter programs for animals. The money also goes to families who cannot afford food for their pets, which is helpful in tough economic times.
NT graduate student Angela Rentfro said the reason she wanted to volunteer for the DHS was so she could foster animals and nurse them back to health.
"The DHS provides everything from food to animal vaccinations. I can be a poor college student and still be a foster volunteer," said Rentfro.
DHS is still looking for volunteers to help with Santa Paws Pet Pictures and gladly accepts donations to help better the lives of animals.
