They walk among us, attending the same classes, completing the same homework assignments and taking the same tests, but there is something different about the leaders of the Mean Green athletic teams.

When asked what makes a leader, three coaches said the same thing: a player that leads by example, takes charge and communicates effectively.

Volleyball head coach Ken Murczek sees leadership in upcoming senior outside hitter Eboni Godfrey. She leads by example, excelling not only in weights and on the courts but academically as well.

“When I recruited her I saw a lot of really great qualities on and off the court that makes me think she will do whatever it takes to be successful in volleyball and school and will transfer into the real world,” Murczek said.

The volleyball staff is looking for the players to have a voice in the gym, weight room and on the court.

“That is her best attribute from the leadership standpoint,” Murczek said. “I think she is going to be really successful at anything she decides to do because she is wired the right way.”

Being vocal is no problem for senior guard Roger Franklin, captain of the men’s basketball team, either.

Junior guard Alzee Williams says vocalizing is one way Franklin sets himself apart from other seniors.

“He is always getting on the team if we do something wrong and even if we do something right,” Williams said. “It’s like having another coach out there sometimes.”

Men’s basketball head coach Tony Benford says Franklin isn’t afraid to challenge his teammates and does a terrific job leading by example as well.

“He is an everyday guy, the intensity and the passion that he brings every day sets him apart,” Benford said. “He is the kind of guy who will be successful in anything because of his people skills.”

Senior tennis captain Barbora Vykydalova is another UNT player admired for her ability to lead. Head coach Sujay Lama says that Vykydalova is one of the best captains he has ever coached.

“She leads by example and takes charge,” Lama said. “We have had a lot of captains with a lot of bark but no real action.”

Although Lama says Vykydalova’s job as captain requires a lot of action, she says its comes easy for her.

“I am lucky because it’s easy to be captain,” she said. “All these girls are always working hard and doing the right thing. Our results will come from how close we are as a family and how hard we work together.”

Every team has its leaders, but in the minds of their coaches and athletes, Godfrey, Franklin and Vykydalova set the bar high for their teammates and athletes everywhere.
