UNT hosted a community service honoree reception at 3 p.m. today at Willis Library. The Multicultural Office, Office of Greek Life, Willis Library and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. sponsored the event that recognized 15 selected students from each of the fraternities and sororities.

Each student chosen by their organization’s president was honored for his or her personal contributions to the community.

The theme of this year’s MLK Day was service. The decision to honor Greek organizations came from Dr. King’s own membership in Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. King joined the organization during his time at Morehouse College, in Atlanta, Ga., in the 1940s.

The reception began with the viewing of “The Witness: From the Balcony of Room 306” a 2008 documentary and short film created to honor the 40th annual remembrance of the life and death of King.

Cheylon Brown, director of the Multicultural Center, emphasized the importance of community service before the honorees were introduced.

“By serving the community you help to keep the dream alive,” Brown said.

Following the honoree reception, students, faculty and community leaders marched to the MLK Jr. Recreation Center at 1300 Wilson St. for a ceremony in honor of Dr. King. The ceremony included guest speakers and dinner that began about 6 p.m.

“It is important to hold these events each year, because you can never forget your past,” said Demetria White, merchandising senior and president of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. “I feel like I see different faces every year when I come to this, like at the march. At first it was just the black sororities and fraternities and now it is starting to go through everyone else,”

White said she feels learning from these events at a predominantly white university is different than at a predominantly black university.

“It is always important to enforce that information, because [everyone] was here willing to learn,” White said.

Dance senior Nathan Blaser said he saw the importance of Greeks recognizing the work that Dr. King did.

“Everything we do is based off this idea that we need to give back to the community and we need to help others,” Blaser said. “I think he [King] was one of the first ones that made it this huge thing and major people like him are what motivated us to do it.”

Blaser said he has made his own personal contributions to the community.

“I love to work with children. I run my own nonprofit dance company for children,” He said. “We do a lot of work with children’s hospitals and teaching at-risk kids.”

In addition to today’s events, UNT Dining Services will continue to commemorate King by offering a menu composed of diverse foods from around the world through Friday, Jan. 24 in Kerr Hall Cafeteria.
