After record-breaking season, Smart honored by Conference USA

In his first year at North Texas, sophomore guard Roosevelt always seemed comfortable, finishing the season fourth in Conference USA in scoring at 18.8 points per game and seventh in the country in three pointers made at 109.

After his stellar scoring season, Smart was named to the Conference USA All-Conference Second Team on Monday afternoon

In his first game for the Mean Green, he dropped 23 points on three 3-pointers to lead the team in the victory. It’s something he did all season, leading the resurgence under new head coach Grant McCasland and beside sophomore point guard Ryan Woolridge.

His season average of 18.8 points was the most on the team by 5.5 points per contest. He also made 125 free throws on 142 attempts equaling 88.2 percent, the second highest in school history.

The most impressive record of his, which likely will not be touched for a while unless he breaks it, is his 3-point record. Smart destroyed the past record of 90 made 3-pointers in a season held by Calvin Watson by posting 109 on nearly 39 percent shooting from deep in 31 games.

His shining moment for the season came on the road against Rice University on Jan. 13 when he scored 42 points, fifth most in school history, and sank 10 threes. The 10 threes is a school record by two makes.

Often times, his value came at the end of games where he always seemed to hit the big shot when the team needed him. Whether it was against San Diego University , Louisiana Tech, University of Texas at El Paso, or even going toe-to-toe with Nick King from Middle Tennessee where Smart hit seven threes, Smart continuously helped carry this team to the bounce-back season the program desperately needed.
