The Mean Green was overpowered 168-118 on Friday when it hosted No. 2 Texas A&M University in UNT’s final dual meet of the season, and the final meet before the Sun Belt Conference Championships for five UNT seniors.
UNT came into the swimming event with a 32-point advantage over the Aggies by diving uncontested. In the pool, the Aggies won all 14 events but withdrew its times in the final two events: 200 yard IM and 400 yard freestyle relay.
The Mean Green was able to take four first and second place finishes and 10 third and fourth place finishes against A&M, which has four Olympic swimmers on its roster.
“We came out with more intensity in this meet,” head coach Joe Dykstra said. “We switched up some lineups and we had a few surprises in some events and some confirmations that some events are not for certain swimmers.”
This was the final home meet for five members on the team: diver Delia Covo, butterfly swimmer Bryn Lewis, sprint swimmer Becca Ploetz, free swimmer Catia Weickgenant and breaststroke swimmer Joanna Wozniak.
“It is bittersweet ending against A&M which is a tough team,” Weikgenant said. “I am going to miss the 30 girls on the team, but I am going to come back and watch them grow as a team.”
Weikgenant is currently on the waiting list at the University of Texas-Southwestern, where she plans to get her master’s as a physician assistant.
The Mean Green has four weeks off to prepare for the SBC Championships, which is a five-day event held in Rockwall.
“Our season is not over,” Covo said. “We need to work hard and go into conference championships and take all the events that we can.”
