Keep Denton Beautiful, a local nonprofit organization focused on community beautification, will host the annual Great American Cleanup initiative on Saturday. The primary goal of the event is to remove litter in the area, thereby serving a larger purpose toward overall community improvement. Hundreds of volunteers from all over Denton are expected to participate this year. Ali Silva, a public relations graduate student, began volunteering her time for Keep Denton Beautiful in 2009. She initially became involved as part of an assignment in a nonprofit course. She also partnered with the organization for projects in a public relations class.

“I volunteered at the office several times a week and during events,” Silva said. “My classes ended but I continued to volunteer.”

Silva feels that these classes helped keep her active in KDB.

“I’d like to think that was part of the point of the classes I took, to foster long-lasting relationships with the organizations you picked,” Silva said. “It certainly worked for me.”

Lauren Barker, KDB’s volunteer coordinator, said that the organization loves having Silva on board.

“She is an active member of our Young Professionals group, and an outspoken supporter for our organization,” Barker said.

Silva believes that KDB inspires civic pride through its efforts.

“When we, as citizens, are proud of our city, others will follow suit,” Silva said. “Denton is a wonderful place to live with a lot to offer. By keeping it beautiful, we ensure it will remain that way.”

Jannibah Coleman is KDB’s community outreach coordinator. Since becoming a part of the movement 23 years ago, it is estimated that volunteers have removed more than 2 million pounds of litter.

“Our volunteers want to make a difference,” Coleman said.

Silva’s willingness to help make that difference is palpable through her passion for the project.

“The Great American Cleanup brings the community together to accomplish a common goal. To me, that’s invaluable,” Silva said. “Hundreds of volunteers are picking up thousands of pounds of trash and they’re doing it together. That’s pretty fantastic.”

The Great American Cleanup will take place throughout Denton Saturday morning. Anyone interested in signing up can register at Denton Civic Center before 8 a.m. More information about Keep Denton Beautiful can be found online at or by visiting their Facebook page.
