Up and coming local native band The Mothers, took a break from their stomping grounds in Denton to perform in Sanger, Texas, at the Lake Ray Roberts Elks Lodge for Nik Woods’s departure to the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, California.

The quintet graced the stage with their signature blend of delicate melodies and indie rock edge. Music sophomore Adriana Valls,  (guitar/vocals), pre-studio art sophomore Naomi Kliewer (guitar/vocals), Sarah Vinson (guitar/vocals), Kyle Williams (drums) and Jake McCandless (bass) sent the attending crowd of 50 into a trance of breathy lullabies.

The first three songs of their set – The House, It Gets the Hose Again and 93 -deemed to be crowd favorites bringing on waves of boisterousness and sing-along chorus’s. The Mothers say most of their inspiration comes from “improvisations that just happen.” They describe their sound as “abandoned park music,” Valls said.

The patterns found in their music are likely to begin with subtle intros that build up to jazzy, funky and folky volumes.

“I can go with that,” Kliewer said. “I like intricate patterns. I really like Tegan and Sara and when you listen to their music it sounds really simple at first, but the more you listen to it the more you find the nuances that make the song. I love that.”

Valls, Kliewer, Vinson and McCandless met in high school and initially started the group after Valls threw the idea out on the table. The band officially formed in early 2012 after a short break. Williams is the newest addition to the band, replacing their previous drummer. They seamlessly jammed through the set, but with a couple slip-ups.

“I like their melodies and harmony, ” Sanger resident Greg Johnson said. “And I like that they write originals.”

The Mothers is different from the other chicks writing and singing out there.

“I think our music shows that girls don’t have to write love songs,” Vinson said. “We can sing about having fun and running over rabbits. We don’t have to be a Taylor Swift, we get to be who we want to be.”
