Blood donations needed
Adalberto Toledo | Staff Writer
The American Red Cross has expressed an emergency need for blood donors after severe winter storms smashed through the northern United States, according to a press release.
Severe winter storms since Jan. 1 have cancelled more than 300 blood drives in 20 states, creating a deficit for the American Red Cross. It requires about 14,000 blood donations a day to cater to the more than 2,500 hospitals and blood transfusion centers around the country. Eligible donors with type O, A and B blood are encouraged to donate, according to the release.
Blood is not all the Red Cross needs, however. Donors for platelets are needed as well, especially those with blood type AB.
Donors in unaffected areas are encouraged to donate, and those in affected areas are also encouraged once travel is safe.
