Brief: Mean Green men’s basketball comeback against Tulsa falls short in regular season finale

The Mean Green men’s basketball team couldn’t finish out the regular season on a positive note, as the team fell to the University of Tulsa 79-68 in the final home game of the year Thursday night.Seniors Vertrail Vaughns, Alzee Williams and Brandan Walton were all honored as part of senior night. Williams and Walton led the team with 20 points each, while Vaughns chipped in eight points.
Tulsa (18-12, 13-2) took the lead to start the game, and UNT (15-15, 6-10) spent the rest of the night playing catch up. After entering halftime up by six, the Golden Hurricane extended the lead to nine with 13:41 remaining before the Mean Green tied it up at 54 with 10:27 to go.
However, that was the closest the Mean Green ever got to taking the lead, as Tulsa then pushed the lead back up to six and fought off UNT’s comeback attempt the rest of the way.
The Golden Hurricane kept looking to score near the basket, which resulted in its 28 points in the paint and 29 free throws made. Tulsa made 12 more free throws than UNT and got 21 more attempts as well.
This loss had no effect on the matchup to start off the C-USA tournament. Before the game was over, the records of other conference teams decided that UNT will finish as the 10-seed, thus missing out on a bye to start the tournament, and will take on Rice University March 11 in El Paso at a time yet to be determined.
