The Mean Green softball team closed the last game of the Texas Shootout Tournament with a 13-4 victory over Stephen F. Austin State University, improving to 11-3 on the season and extending the current win streak to 10 games.

It didn’t take long for North Texas to get on the scoreboard, thanks to a solo home run from senior infielder Brooke Foster over the left field wall on the second pitch of the game.

North Texas added another homerun with two outs in the top of the third inning, when junior infielder Dani Hoff smacked a solo home run over the right field wall. Senior outfielder Jackie Miller added a two-out triple that drove in a run to give North Texas a 4-1 lead.

The turning point of the game was when SFA’s head Coach Gay McNutt was ejected after arguing a call with the umpire. That sparked UNT’s fifth inning that included five runs on four hits, and two back-to-back doubles from sophomore utility player Taylor Schoblocher and junior outfielder Kat Strunk to stretch the lead to 9-1.

Senior pitcher Ashley Kirk had a solid outing as well, giving up one run in five innings of work. The team scored five more runs in the seventh contributing to the lopsided score.

The team will now host the Best Western/Courtyard Classic starting at 2:30 p.m. March 1at Lovelace Stadium against the Wichita State University Shockers.
