The Mean Green swimming and diving team competed in its first Conference USA championships in Atlanta, Ga. from Wednesday Feb. 26 to Saturday March 1, finishing in fifth place. Rice University repeated as C-USA champions.

During day one of the meet, the Mean Green finished fourth in 200-medley relay and fifth in the 800 freestyle relay, which put them at fourth place overall. Day two of the meet saw distance sophomore Jana Burkard earn a medal for her third place finish in the 500 freestyle. However, the Mean Green dropped to fifth place overall after day two.

UNT remained in fifth place by the end of day three despite backstroke junior Mona Groteguth’s fifth and sixth place finish in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly respectively. Junior Krista Rossum finished second in the 400 individual medley. Senior divers Rebecca Johnson and Catherine Johnson finished fourth and fifth respectively in the one-meter board.

The Mean Green couldn’t move out of fifth place during the final day of the meet on Saturday, but had good showings from Burkard and Groteguth. Burkard placed third in the 1650 freestyle while Groteguth placed fifth in the 200 backstroke. Rossum finished in eighth place for the 200 breaststroke.
