The Mean Green tennis team fell 4-0 to No. 2 seed Rice University in the semifinals of the Conference USA tournament Saturday afternoon, ending its first season in the conference.
UNT (11-11, 2-1) advanced to the semifinals on Friday after a 4-0 victory over the University of Southern Mississippi, but couldn’t continue its momentum on Saturday.
The Mean Green got swept in singles play by the Lady Owls and never found its footing. Sophomore Kamilla Galieva fell to Rice’s Katherine Ip, who was ranked No. 91 in the country.
Rice kept up the attack as it beat junior Kseniya Bardabush and freshman Anastasiya Shestakova. The Lady Owls capped the victory by downing sophomore Agustina Valenzuela to move on to the C-USA Finals.
The Mean Green won the Sun Belt Championship the previous two seasons, and three out of the last four years. This was the earliest finish for the team since the 2008-2009 season in the Sun Belt which concluded after a defeated to the University of Denver in the semifinals of the conference tournament.
