Brief: Mean Green women’s basketball drops close game against East Carolina

After cutting the lead to three points in the final minute, the Mean Green women’s basketball team couldn’t complete the comeback and took a 56-49 road loss at East Carolina University Saturday afternoon.
After holding the Pirates (21-3, 9-2) to 22 points and 25 percent shooting in the first half, UNT (10-14, 4-7) allowed a 10-0 run midway in the second half to give ECU a lead it would never relinquish. The Mean Green cut the lead to three twice, but couldn’t get over the hump.
The final chance at avoiding the loss came with 30 seconds left, when senior guard Laura McCoy shot an open three-pointer that could have tied the game. However, she missed and ECU shot free throws the rest of the way to seal the win.
Sophomore forward Alexis Hyder was the only player to score in double digits with 18 points and eight rebounds as well.
Next, the Mean Green will face the University of Texas at El Paso at 7 p.m. Feb. 19 in the Super Pit.
