The Mean Green men’s basketball team finished the regular season with a 69-68 road loss to the University of Texas – San Antonio on Saturday. The loss dropped North Texas to the No. 8 seed in the Conference USA tournament.

North Texas (14-16, 8-10) played fairly well in the back-and-forth first half, shooting 46 percent from the field with a 42-33 lead at the break.

However, the Mean Green started the second half cold offensively, and only hit nine of 27 shots in the second half. UTSA went on a 6-0 run to start the second by turning a couple of quick turnovers into easy transition scores, cutting the Mean Green’s lead to one in the first few of minutes of the half.

The Mean Green never quit, with junior forward Maurice Aniefiok hitting five of the team’s seven three-pointers on the night to keep the game from getting out of hand. The game started to slip from North Texas when forwards Jeremy Combs and Colin Voss got into foul trouble, each committing their fourth foul with the game winding down and on the line in it’s final several minutes.

After going up 55-48 midway through the second half, North Texas gave up a 9-2 run to put UTSA back in the game tied at 57-57 with 7:45 left. The Roadrunners took the lead back with 5:00 left in the second half at 61-59.

North Texas shot poorly late, going 1 of 9 from the field with game winding down in the last few minutes. Sophomore guard DeAndre Harris turned the ball over with 48 seconds left, leading to a UTSA basket that extended the Roadrunner lead to 69-63.

Senior guard T.J. Taylor hit a three pointer on the next possession to bring the Mean Green within three at 69-66 with 28 seconds remaining.

Harris had a chance at a game-tying three pointer later, but Aniefiok rebounded the miss and put it back to make it 69-68. North Texas tried fouling UTSA on the following inbounds play, but no foul was called and UTSA ran out the clock for the win.

North Texas will play the University of Rice in the first round of the C-USA Tournament at 8:30 on Wednesday in Birmingham.
