The Mean Green men’s golf team finished in fifth place out of 15 teams at the two-day Lone Star Invitational tournament in San Antonio on Monday and Tuesday.
The team is coming off a 14th-place finish at the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga., which was the worst finish of the season for UNT. However, the team bounced back with help from three players who finished under par in the third and final round on Tuesday.
Freshman Cory Churchman, junior Juan Munoz and sophomore Gonzalo Rubio all shot under par in that round, with UNT finishing with its lowest day of the tournament at five under par. After shooting 292 in the first round and 291 in the second, UNT improved by eight strokes to shoot a team total 283 in the final round.
Freshman Nick Rodriguez led the Mean Green in two of his three rounds and finished at one-under par for a 14th place finish, his best of the season.
Churchman made a third-round push by shooting three under par 69, a nine-stroke improvement from the previous round. He was the only UNT player to break 70 all week and had four birdies with one bogey.
The Mean Green will now prepare for the Aggie Invitational April 5 to 6 in College Station.
