The North Texas Men’s Basketball team named sophomore forward Jeremy Combs and junior guard J-Mychal Reese its captains for the 2015-2016 season, per head coach Tony Benford.
“Since I’ve been here, Jeremy hasn’t missed a practice,” Benford said. “He’s so reliable. J-Mychal, he’s been doing a great job for us since he got here. They’re two of the best leaders we have.”
Last year Combs was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman team while averaging 10 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. He said he was excited to embrace his new leadership role with the team.
“I feel good. It’s a good accomplishment,” Combs said. “I’ve been trying to be a leader ever since I got here and it feels good to finally have a title to the role”
Reese, a transfer from Texas A&M University, was the top rated point guard in Texas coming out of high school in 2012 according to ESPN.com. The point guard averaged 28.3 points and 4.6 assists per game for his high school.
He said the decision to come to North Texas last year was an easy one and, like Combs, is ready to lead the team.
“My teammates and coaches believe in me,” Reese said. “Coach Benford has known me since I was in seventh or eighth grade. We have great chemistry. I’m happy to be in this role. I’m going to just lead by example and be vocal. When we’re facing adversity, I’m going to just stay positive.”
North Texas opens its season on Friday, Nov. 13 at home against Jarvis Christian University.
