Freshman guard Clarke Overlander has asked for a release from his scholarship and plans to transfer from the UNT men’s basketball program, head coach Tony Benford announced yesterday.
“I want to thank my teammates, coach Benford and the staff at North Texas for the opportunities this season, but at this time, I feel like moving on might be the most beneficial thing for my playing career,” Overlander said in a press release. “My family and I appreciate all of the tremendous support we received from the fans and the entire North Texas community.”
Hampered by a mid-season ACL strain, Overlander played in 18 of the 32 games this season, averaging 1.1 points a game on 19.2 percent shooting. Overlander made seven of his 46 three-point attempts, for 15.2 percent, this season and was three for six from inside the arc.
“Clarke is a tremendous person with a great family, and we appreciate his contributions to this team,” Benford said in the release. “I have no doubt that Clarke will be successful in whatever he chooses to do, and we wish him the best of luck.”
Overlander, a native of Argyle, was the first Denton-area basketball player to accept a scholarship from UNT in more than a decade. He led Argyle High School to the Division 3A state championship and was named the UIL State Tournament MVP for his performance. He was also awarded District 9-3A MVP his junior and senior year.
