The Mean Green softball team clinched a spot the Conference USA Tournament after defeating the University of Texas – El Paso Miners in both games of an afternoon home doubleheader on Saturday.
Game one
The Mean Green (18-30, 10-12) beat UTEP (14-38, 9-14) in the first game 12-4.
North Texas had a 3-2 lead after the first inning, and built on it. Junior utility player Taylor Schoblocher hit her 14th home run of the year in the bottom of the second, which gave the Mean Green a 5-2 lead. Senior outfielder Kat Strunk hit a solo home run in the sixth inning, giving the Mean Green a 12-4 lead, and ending the game because of the eight-run mercy rule.
Strunk led the North Texas offensive leader board with a double and home run to go with 2 RBI. Freshman pitcher Monique Garcia threw five innings and allowed jus two runs on five hits.
Game two
The Mean Green continued playing well in game two of the must-win series with a 9-3 win.
The game was tied 2-2 until the fourth inning, when back-to-back singles by Mallory Land and Kelli sparked a three-run inning for the team. North Texas scored four runs in the sixth inning, thanks in part to a pair of homeruns by Strunk and Schoblocher, to take a 9-2 lead. UTEP mustered just one more run in the seventh inning.
The team will play its final game of the regular season on Sunday against UTEP at home. First pitch is set for noon.
