Brief: softball drops third game against UAB

The Mean Green softball team lost the final game of a three game series against the University of Alabama – Birmingham 5-2 on the road Sunday. UAB swept North Texas in the first two games of the series Saturday.
Things looked bright for the Mean Green (7-12, 0-3) early as it jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. Senior infielder Dani Hoff singled to right field and sophomore infielder Kelli Schkade scored the first run of the game.
Soon after that, sophomore utility player Mallory Land grounded out to second base, enabling junior utility player Taylor Schoblocher to score, putting the Mean Green up 2-0 after the top half of the first inning. But that was the last time the Mean Green scored.
After a quiet second inning, the Blazers (18-5, 3-0) dominated the third inning similar to how the Mean Green had dominated the first inning. The Blazers hit back-to-back home runs to tie the ballgame 2-2 at the end of three.
Things were looking up for the Mean Green in the fifth inning when Land hit a double, but Hoff was thrown out at the plate. After that, the Blazers took their first lead of the game at 3-2 thanks to a single to left field.
The Blazers put the icing on the cake in the sixth inning when their sophomore infielder Mary Warren hit a two-run home run to put UAB up 5-2.
Next up, the Mean Green will return home for the first time since Feb. 8 for a doubleheader with the University of Houston at Lovelace Field on Wednesday. Game one is scheduled for 4 p.m., while game two will start at 6 p.m.
