The Mean Green softball team lost the third game of its series with Louisiana Tech University 5-4 on the road Sunday. The loss completed a sweep by Louisiana Tech (29-15, 12-6), with the Mean Green (16-27, 8-12) losing the first two games 3-0 and 4-1 on Saturday.
La. Tech scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead. North Texas didn’t get on the scoreboard until a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning by sophomore catcher Shelbie Smith. But, La. Tech scored two more runs to take a 4-1 lead over North Texas.
Junior utility player Taylor Schoblocher hit a two-run home run sixth inning to cut the lead to 4-3, and sophomore utility player Mallory Land hit a solo home run in the same inning to tie it all up.
But the loss ended in heartbreak as La. Tech hit a walk off, game winning double in the seventh inning to take the game.
Sophomore pitcher Stacey Underwood said even though the team battled hard, she is disappointed in herself.
“I think we were hitting the ball pretty well, but they were really good,” Underwood said. “We were prepared for the game but for some reason didn’t put it together.”
Smith said liked the way the team battled back after it went down 4-1, but added it needs to get back in the win column soon.
“I felt alright out there batting but we still lost,” Smith said. “It was good to see us step up today but we need to keep playing to get prepared for UTEP next weekend.”
Freshman pitcher Monique Garcia started the game and left in the fifth inning. She gave up three runs on five hits.
“We didn’t play too well overall, but definitely better than yesterday,” Garcia said. “We came out strong from the beginning with our hitters being aggressive but didn’t get the job done.”
The Mean Green will enter the final week of the season hoping to clinch one of the final spots in the Conference USA tournament. The team will play a road doubleheader with Oklahoma State University on Wednesday before playing a home game with the University of Oklahoma on Thursday. The team will finish out the regular season with a weekend home series with the University of Texas – El Paso.
