In its first game in more than a week, the Mean Green softball team suffered a 6-3 loss to the No. 5 University of Oklahoma Sooners on Monday.

Oklahoma (39-6) got on the board first with a two run first inning. The Mean Green (16-24) scored a run in the top of the second inning, and two more in the top of the third inning to take a 3-2 lead over the No. 5 team in the country.

But the Sooners struck back with three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 5-3 lead over North Texas. The Mean Green didn’t score for the rest of the game, and OU added one more run in the sixth inning to make it 6-3. The Mean Green had two runners on the base in the seventh inning, but couldn’t capitalize to rally back.

Freshman pitcher Monique Garcia pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed six hits and two runs. Sophomore pitcher Madison Thompson came in for Garcia and pitched 2 1/3 innings and allowed four hits and three runs. Sophomore pitcher Kenzie Grimes finished the game out by pitching two innings, allowing just one run on two hits. Senior infielder Dani Hoff was 1-4 with an RBI for the offense.

The Mean Green will play a home doubleheader with Stephen F. Austin University on Wednesday. Game one begins at 3 p.m. and game two begins at 5 p.m.
