The Mean Green softball team’s season ended in the first round of the Conference USA tournament with a 5-0 loss to the No. 2 seed Florida Atlantic University.
FAU (36-16-1) pitcher Kylee Hanson blanked the Mean Green (19-31) all evening, pitching a complete game shutout, allowing just one hit and striking out eight.
The Owls scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning with a home run by Carnesha Thompson to take a 1-0 lead.
FAU scored one run in the second inning and two more in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead, forcing head coach Tracey Kee to pull starting pitcher Monique Garcia. The freshman pitched 2 2/3 innings, and allowed four runs on five hits.
Sophomore pitcher Kenzie Grimes replaced Garcia and only allowed one run in the last half of the game, but the Mean Green bats simply couldn’t muster any offense. The only hit of the game came in the seventh inning by junior utility player Taylor Schoblocher to break up Hanson’s perfect game.
