Just a day after earning its second win of the season against Louisiana Tech University, Mean Green tennis defeated No. 36 Oklahoma 4-1 at the Waranch Tennis Complex. North Texas lost to the Sooners 7-0 in each of the past two seasons and had not beaten a top-40 opponent since 2013.
The Mean Green (3-4, 1-0) got off to a hot start in the opening doubles match. The duo of senior Kamilla Galieva and junior Alexis Thoma and senior pairing of Agustina Valenzuela and Anastasiya Shestakova won 6-0 and 6-2, respectively, earning North Texas the first point of the event.
In singles, Valenzuela, Shestakova and Galieva each earned one win apiece to earn the team victory. The only loss to Oklahoma (3-3) was earned by freshman Maria Kononova, who couldn’t overcome the No. 52 ranked singles player in the nation, falling Lily Miyazaki 6-2, 6-2.
North Texas will look to capitalize on this weekend’s success in the first matchup of a five-game road trip on Saturday, Feb. 20 against Virginia Commonwealth University in Lynchburg, Virginia at 1 p.m.
