Brief: Texting and driving ban now enforced
Staff Report
Yesterday, the Denton Police Department began enforcing a city ordinance stating Denton residents can be fined up to $200 for texting and driving.
In a North Texas Daily article that ran Jan. 22, city transportation director Mark Nelson said though the ordinance was passed last spring, it couldn’t be enforced because most Denton citizens would not know a texting and driving ban was in place.
To address this, signs reading “Prohibited: texting or electronic messaging while driving, by ordinance, up to $200 fine,” were posted throughout Denton. Signs will not be placed on Interstate 35 or I-35 service roads.
