This past weekend, Snarky Puppy, a jazz band featuring eight UNT alumni, scored a Grammy award for Best R&B Performance for its single “Something.” Soul singer Lalah Hathaway appears on vocals.

The group has come a long way since members formed the band more than 10 years ago, playing its first gig in the basement of J&J’s Pizza on the Denton square, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Many of the band members were also a part of UNT’s One O’clock Lab Band, which is reserved for top-tier jazz students in the College of Music.

Guitarist and College of Music graduate Michael League directed credit toward his fellow band members in his acceptance speech.

“They’ve spent the last 10 years with me, eight of them touring very unglamorously on the road and sleeping on floors and couches,” he said. “To be here now is completely unimaginable.”

The band, now consisting of more than 30 members, has gone from small, humble beginnings to performing all over the world. Last year alone, the band played 184 performances in 18 countries.
