UNT is offering students the opportunity to travel for free to Hot Springs, Ark., to watch the Sun Belt Conference basketball tournaments this weekend.
Director of Athletic promotions Jamie Adams said that UNT is the only university in the Sun Belt Conference that offers the service, with this being the fourth year UNT will bus students to Hot Springs for the event.
The bus will leave the Fouts Field parking lot Friday at 8:30 a.m. and arrive in Hot Springs by 2 p.m.
The Mean Green women’s basketball team plays the University of Lousiana-Lafayette at 2:30 p.m. in the Summit Arena, while the men’s team will on the ULL Ragin’ Cajuns at 6:30 p.m. in the Convention Center Court.
Admission to all games is free with student ID. Students riding the bus will be provided with snacks, drinks and Mean Green merchandise thanks to the sponsorship of the athletic department and student activities.
Adams said that bringing even 50 students has a large impact because of the limited capacity of the gyms in Hot Springs.
“It makes a huge difference,” Adams said. “They’ve been on the bus for five hours, so they come in ready and we give them rally towels, foam fingers and face paint.”
The bus will leave Hot Springs by 9 p.m. on Friday at the latest and return to Denton by 2:30 a.m.
Shuttles will be offered for every day that the Mean Green teams are in action at the conference, but capacity is limited.
