After downing rival Texas A&M University over the weekend at the National Collegiate Paintball Association Houston Open, the UNT paintball team has been ranked No. 1 in the country.

Team captain and advertising junior Justin Willingham said UNT and the Aggies have been rivals for the past couple of years, with UNT trailing A&M all season. UNT finally moved past A&M in the rankings over the weekend.

In the semifinals of the tournament, UNT was pitted against the Aggies’ top line. After a quick victory to go up 1-0, a controversial round took place and UNT was awarded the point, advancing it to the finals against the University of Houston.

“It’s pretty refreshing because no matter what event has gone on in the past couple of years there’s been that rivalry between us and A&M,” Willingham said. “And with this event, A&M’s top line was the only team to go 4-0 through the preliminaries and into the semifinals. So when we ended up ‘2-0-ing’ them to go on to the finals it was pretty refreshing for all of us. It gave us a little boost of confidence.”

UNT went on to beat the Cougars to capture first place in the tournament.

President and pre-electrical engineering sophomore Michael Calender, said that he looks forward to a more close competition with A&M in the future.

“They were our biggest competition throughout because in the first three tournaments, it was us and them in every tournament,” Calender said. “So we definitely have a strong rivalry with them now.”

The team will put its No. 1 ranking to the test on March 23 when it participates in another regional competition before nationals on April 19.
