With a 4-1 victory over the University of Tulsa on Friday night, the Mean Green soccer team gained sole possession of second place in the Conference USA West Division.

Before the win, Tulsa (9-5-1, 3-2-1) had one fewer loss than UNT in  division play. Despite weather that dropped to the low 40’s and light rain, the Mean Green (10-5-1, 4-2-1) fought off the Hurricane to move past them.

UNT’s first goal came two minutes into the game by sophomore forward Amber Haggerty and senior forward Lynda Hercules followed it in the 14th minute with a goal of her own.

Two minutes before the half, senior forward Vanessa Ibewuike added a score from the top of the box to make it a 3-0 lead. Tulsa senior defender Tori Peters scored in the 54th minute, but that would be the only goal for the Hurricane.

With five minutes remaining, senior defender Kelsey Hodges sealed the deal with a goal from 40 yards out. It was her 29th career goal, moving her to ninth place overall in school history.

UNT played the West Division leader Colorado College (5-0-0) earlier this year and lost 3-2. UNT will prepare for two more road games next weekend, starting with Middle Tennessee State University next Friday.
