The Mean Green soccer won’t be climbing up the ranking in Conference USA after losing to Rice and Colorado College this weekend. In the C-USA preseason coaches’ poll, UNT was ranked third in the conference behind its two weekend opponents.

On Friday in Houston, UNT (7-5-1, 1-2-1) suffered a 4-0 shutout loss against Rice (4-5-2, 2-2), marking the team’s biggest lost since 2006.

The Mean Green outshot the Owls, but the team couldn’t find a way to convert and put points on the board. After being down 0-1 at the half, UNT allowed Rice two points in the first six minutes of the second half which was followed by another goal at the 77th minute to a total of four.

UNT fell down by three goals to Colorado (9-3, 4-0) 28 minutes into the game. Although senior forward Vanessa Ibewuike scored and junior midfielder Leah Cox would add goals, the team couldn’t overcome the deficit.

Colorado College reached the NCAA tournament last season and has reached the Final Four five times in program history.

The team looks to bounce back playing at home on Friday against the University of Texas-San Antonio.
