Brief: women’s basketball loses overtime road game to Rice

The Mean Green women’s basketball team lost its 17th game of the season 58-50 on Sunday afternoon to Rice University. The loss dropped the Mean Green to 2-17 overall and 13th place in the Conference USA standings.
North Texas went into halftime leading 21-20 despite shooting 25.9 percent from the field. However, the Mean Green defense was stout in the first half, holding Rice to 23.8 percent shooting.
Rice opened up a 40-29 lead in the second half, but the Mean Green went on a 13-2 run to take 43-42 lead with under four minutes left. The two teams traded buckets until the game was tied at 48-48 at the end of regulation.
The Mean Green shot 48.1 percent from the field in the second half, but that tailed off in overtime as the team shot just 22.2 percent. Rice took advantage and built a lead that it did not give up, crushing North Texas’ hopes of winning its third game.
Senior forward Briesha Wynn led the team with 17 points, while sophomore forward Eboniey Jeter had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Mean Green will return home for the first time since Jan. 17 to play Western Kentucky University on Thursday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
