Brief: Women’s basketball team gets blown out in conference opener

The Mean Green women’s basketball team met a rude awakening Wednesday night in Murfreesboro, Tenn., as it was blown out 86-42 by Middle Tennessee State University in its Conference USA debut.
From the start of the game, Middle Tennessee (12-3, 1-0) proved to be too much for the Mean Green (6-8, 0-1) to handle as the team took a big lead early on and never let up. By halftime, UNT was down 42-20.
Turnovers and poor rebounding were the culprits for the blowout, as Middle Tennessee scored 60 points off second chance points and turnovers. The team as a whole had 24 turnovers to the Blue Raiders’ 12.
Freshman guard Candice Adams and senior forward Ash‘Lynne Evans led the Mean Green in scoring, each with nine points. UNT shot 25.9 percent on field goals and allowed Middle Tennessee to shoot 41.9 percent.
The three-point shooting was worse for the Mean Green, as the team only made one of 14 attempts. On the other hand, Middle Tennessee senior center KeKe Stewart finished with 35 points and made 11 three-point shots, one away from tying the NCAA record.
The Mean Green looks to bounce back in its first game ever against the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (7-7, 1-0) at 6 p.m. on Saturday in Charlotte, N.C.
