Brief: Women’s basketball’s season ends in double-overtime loss

The Mean Green women’s basketball team fell in a double-overtime thriller against the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, falling 80-74 tonight.
UNT (11-19, 10-11) had three starters – freshman forward Alexis Hyder, junior guard Laura McCoy and sophomore guard BreAnna Dawkins – foul out in the second overtime period.
Before fouling out, Hyder carried the Mean Green with her fourth straight double-double. She scored 25 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked three shots. After losing Hyder and the other two starters, UNT could not handle the ULL full-court pressure (10-20, 3-18).
Six ULL three-pointers helped the Ragin’ Cajuns get started on a 23-7 run, but the Mean Green roared back to take a 34-32 lead into halftime.
With the scored tied at 58 in the second half, ULL freshman guard Keke Veal had a chance to win the game in overtime, but Hyder blocked her layup attempt, forcing overtime.
ULL took the lead in the second overtime and won the third double-overtime game in Sun Belt Conference Tournament history.
The Mean Green will take the court in Conference USA next year.
