This week’s athletes: tennis freshman Dané Joubert, golf sophomore Jason Roets and golf senior Marco Scarola

Q1: Where are you from?

Joubert: De Doorns, South Africa – 8860 miles from Denton, Texas

Roets: Johannesburg, South Africa – 9111 miles from Denton, Texas

Scarola: Johannesburg, South Africa – 9111 miles from Denton, Texas

Q2: What do you miss most about home?

Joubert: I miss the type of people back there. The landscape is much different, here is so flat. There we have mountains and beautiful land. I miss the food we eat, the way we celebrate and my family. Even though I have a family here, it isn’t the same.

Roets: It’s really tough being so far away from your family. Most people here are from Texas and go home and see their family whenever, but seeing your parents twice a year is tough and it’s a long way from home.

Scarola: To be honest, Texas is really similar to my home in South Africa. We have pretty warm summers and not too cold winters. The people in Texas have made me love it here. They are really friendly and made me feel like I’m at home.

Q3: What is the hardest thing about being a student athlete?

Joubert: I think the hardest thing is time management. Some days you feel like wanting to be normal, but I can’t imagine my life without tennis. But some days you do want to just be normal and watch a movie.

Roets: It is a pretty demanding schedule, going to school in the morning. And sometimes you have workouts before school, then come back, go to study hall, practice and start it over again. I wouldn’t trade it though. Golf is my life.

Scarola: I have loved every second of being here and playing golf. I am almost done now, and that’s the sad part.
