North Texas volleyball fell 3-1 to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington on Saturday. The Mean Green (4-7) failed to turn the match around after losing the first two sets.

North Texas began all four sets with a minuscule lead, but the Seahawks were quickly able to regain control.

The first two sets ended with the Mean Green only being able to put up 16 and 15 points, respectively. North Texas had 19 total team errors going into the third set.

“When you play a good team like UNCW they will force you to make some errors,” head coach Andrew Palileo said. “They really put us in a position where the things that we struggle with had to be played out.”

The third set is where the women began to figure out how to maintain their lead over the Seahawks. Freshman middle blocker Emma Eakin played the most she had all season, and junior middle Amanda Chamberlain had back-to-back kills which helped her team pull out the 25-21 third set win.

“I’m just trying to bring energy [to the team],” Eakin said. “Every opportunity I get I try to excel and make a difference for us.”

Despite the loss, Chamberlain set a new career-high kill record that was previously set during last weekend’s tournament versus Utah Valley Universiry. The junior will now try to earn more than 23 kills throughout the rest of the season to surpass her personal best.

“I’m coming in the gym extra trying to refine what I do,” Chamberlain said. “You can kill the ball all you want but you still have to be able to block and work on other aspects.”

Up next: The Mean Green will take on the University of Incarnate Word at 11 a.m. on Friday Sept. 16 in Nacogdoches, TX for the Stephen F. Austin Invitational. This will be the last tournament before conference play begins on Sept. 23.
