During the wee hours tonight, stand-up comedians will flock to a local bar stage, belting out humorous one-liners while simultaneously asking attendees to contribute their change to charity.

From 10 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. at the Treehouse Bar and Grill, the Denton Comedy Collective will host its monthly Hilarity for Charity event, which seeks to gain donations from the crowd for the Children’s Advocacy Center for Denton County.

The comedy group will be asking for donations in a bucket while the bar will be serving up select drink specials, with the percentage of the money going towards the charity total as well.

Charity founder and theatre arts senior Matthew Solomon said even though the group started last summer, the charity event definitely brings out the best for some comedians, due to the pressure to produce an abundance of laughs.

“It’s one hell of a motivator performing for a charity,” Solomon said. “You don’t want to suck.  You don’t want to not raise money for them.”

Solomon, who wears multiple hats including booking agent and producer for the DCC, is the headliner for this month’s event. For him, any money they can produce to serve a good cause is great, no matter how low the total.

“We don’t really set a monetary goal, we just want to make a difference,” Solomon said. “Any charity organization that raises money will tell you every penny counts so a penny at a time or a dollar at a time is how we’re taking it.”

While the main goal is to produce funds for a good cause, another positive for the group has been the opportunity to perform at a new venue. Since the group is rather new to the Denton performance scene, breaking through has been tough.

“I just hope the comedy scene here in Denton continues to grow,” Solomon said. “A lot of people didn’t want comedy to grow but after I performed at Banter a few times, people started reaching out for more comedy.”

With more than 10 comics in the guild, more stage time and keeping Hilarity for Charity active are important goals, Solomon said.

Because the Treehouse Bar and Grill is a new place, the bar was extremely warm toward creating a spot for these comics, owner Grant McGuire said. Coupled with the charity, time spots for stand-up just seemed like a good idea.

“They were looking for another place to play and have a comedy night,” McGuire said. “Right now we’re in that phase of figuring out how to get people in the doors on certain nights of the week, so it seemed like a decent draw.”

Some members of the audience include workers from the Children’s Advocacy Center for Denton County.

“It’s kind of neat that they could take comedy and apply it to such a serious issue,” said Dan Leal, executive director of the Children’s Advocacy Center for Denton County. “It’s such a nice gesture for them to do a third-party donation. Our people will definitely go out for some laughs.”
