Cowboy Chicken serves up flavorful fowl
Nadia Hill / Senior Staff Writer
The outside of Cowboy Chicken looks similar to every other fast food restaurant it’s next to at its home in Rayzor Ranch.
However, walking inside is a whole different experience. Patrons are immediately enveloped with an aroma of smoky hickory wood and roasting chicken.
This, and the restaurant’s homey, cozy environment speak to why the chain has remained in business for more than 30 years.
The new restaurant on University Drive brings the chain’s total number of restaurants to seven.
Cowboy Chicken is known for its all-natural rotisserie chicken, a cooking process which patrons see firsthand while waiting to order.
A brick wall with a glass window shows off perfectly roasted and tender chickens, flames licking the meat as they rotate on skewers.
The menu is a simple choice of chicken and sides. Slight variations include a giant “Cowboy Taco,” their famous enchiladas and the recently added salads.
The chicken enchiladas, marinated for a day and a half in a creamy tomatillo-sour cream sauce, are tender and filling, but not too heavy.
They’re packed with flavor, including a hint of spice in the tomatillo sauce and the smoky flavor of the chicken.
Their campfire veggies, a mix of diced and sauteed zucchini, squash and onions, were light and fresh.
However, their “Denton’s Best Twice-Baked Mashed Potaters” were disappointing. They had a consistency similar to grits rather than potatoes and lacked an outstanding flavor. They did not live up to their hyped-up reputation.
For dessert, the southern blackberry cobbler with ice cream was warm, comforting and delectable. It had sweet, gooey blackberries and crumbled pie baked together and topped with vanilla ice cream.
Two enchiladas, two sides and dessert were about $11, well worth the price and multiple visits.
