Denton Black Film Festival returns to in-person format

The ninth annual Denton Black Film Festival returns this week in a hybrid format. The in-person festival began on Wednesday, Jan. 25, and will end Sunday, Jan. 29, while the virtual portion will extend the festival online from Jan. 29 through Sunday, Feb. 5.
Festival events will take place at several locations across Denton. Films will be shown at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, Campus Theatre and streamed online. Musical and comedic performances, art galleries and workshop classes will be held at multiple venues, including the UNT CoLab, Texas Woman’s University’s Margo Jones Performance Hall and the Denton Civic Center.
This year marks the festival’s first year of in-person events since 2020, as the past two fests were held completely virtually due to COVID-19. The Denton Black Film Festival aims to amplify the work and stories of the Black community, addressing under-representation in the film industry and building community through sharing culture. Proceeds from the festival help fund the Denton African American Scholarship Foundation.
