What if there was a place on the web where someone could find every artist or album that has come out of Denton?

Denton Record Chronicles, a blog started by members of the band Fishboy, aims to do just that, by profiling a different album by a Denton band every day for a year.

Co-founders Dave Koen, a UNT RTVF alum, and Eric Michener started the site on Jan. 1 after realizing that the rich Denton music scene was lacking a proper online database.

“Denton has a great reputation for music for a number of reasons,” Koen said. “But the public often can’t name more than a handful of popular bands, which we felt diminished its size both past and present.”

Koen said this is when he and Michener added an “s” to the end of one of the city’s newspaper publication’s titles and went to work.

“If it’s well written and serves it’s purpose then I’m all for it,” former guitarist for Denton band New Science Projects Patrick Keizer said.

New Science Projects are one of the many artists featured on Denton Record Chronicles, and Keizer said even though he no longer plays as part of the band he believes it can be possible for something like this to affect an artist’s popularity.

“So much of that can’t be determined unless other factors are also discussed,” Keizer said. “Such as how often that band plays locally, whether or not they have releases anyone can access, and if they’re feature on the blog is disparaging it may damage the band.”

Koen said the blog will try to avoid bias, but if they feel passionate about a release they will throw in their opinion.

“We actively try to be an archival site rather than a review site,” Koen said. “We also focus more on taking pictures rather than posting music for not only legal reasons with copyrights but we want to cover everything, including what some may consider unlistenable.”

Denton famous Grammy-award winning polka band Brave Combo also have a few posts on the blog, with its albums “The Exotic Rocking Life,” “Let’s Kiss,” “Polka for a Gloomy World,” and “Polkasonic” listed as featured releases.

“In the perfect world, such a blog might include a little bit of info about each release that either addresses the motivation for making the recording or covers some interesting aspect of it,” said Carl Finch, guitar, keyboard and accordion player for Brave Combo. “For instance, Bob Dylan heard our recording of “Must Be Santa” and decided to copy it note for note and release his own version.”

Finch hopes that the profiles will go a bit further in the future to include anecdotes like this, as he believes it will help the blog succeed and grow.

Koen said the group is running out of music they are personally familiar with and can write about from memory.

“We’re currently focused on getting to 365 posts,” Koen said. “After that, we’ll see what happens.”
