Denton Police Department patrol officer Yancy Green resuscitated a newborn baby Tuesday afternoon after the infant and its mother were found in the back seat of vehicle, according to a press release from Denton Police Media Relations.

Yancy responded around 12:30 p.m. to a report of an unconscious person in a parking lot located in the 900 block of West University Drive, who ended up being the mother who had given birth in the backseat of her vehicle.

Upon Green’s arrival, he saw that the newborn was on the mother’s chest, “turning blue” and did not appear to be breathing. Green immediately began rendering aid to the child by attempting to clear its airway of any obstruction while also attempting to aid the mother, who was going in and out of consciousness.

Brian Gilmore, an arson investigator with Denton Fire/Rescue, arrived at the scene and assisted Green.

“Having a baby not breathing can be difficult and stressful to deal with,” Gilmore said in the release. “Officer Green kept calm and provided the best care possible.”

Additional paramedics arrived at the scene to relieve Green and Gilmore and transport the mother and child to a local hospital, where both are reported to be “doing well,” according to the release.
